Vineyard tractors

Vineyard tractor is a class of agricultural equipment whose structural features are determined by specific work conditions in vineyard. First of all, it is necessary to move between the rows (inter-row width is usually up to 1.5-2 meters), and varying steepness of slope on which the vineyards are established. As a result of this, besides the universal agricultural equipment, special vineyard tractors are used in winegrowing. They are usually relatively low-powered and light vehicles with a small total width, on wheeled mover, caterpillar thread or of combined (half-track) type.

Several main subtypes of these machines can be distinguished:

Single-axled tractor has two wheels which are operated by a pair of frame rails and the engine with capacity up to 10 horse powers. May be used for towing the trailer or as the engine for machines working from power shaft.

Narrow-gauge tractors are a variety of tractors which have structural features intended for work in the conditions of inter-row width of less than 1.4-1.6 m. These family of tractors are represented by rear-driven or all-wheel drive vehicles with capacity raging between 12 and 55 horse powers and total width up to 100-130 cm.

Capacity of 30-55 horse powers and good transmission of energy of caterpillar tractors enable successful operation on steep slopes. The width of such machines constitutes 80 to 150 cm and specific wide caterpillars do not damage the soil between the rows.

It is also reasonable to distinguish half-track, or so called Styrian type of the vineyard tractor, which is comparable to narrow-track tractor whose rear wheels are replaced with crawler drives.

The choice of the vineyard tractor depends on the requirements and specific work conditions. For instance, single-axled tractor is in fact a type of detachable equipment, rear-driven narrow-gauge tractor can fully operate only on relatively flat surfaces, and the steep slopes require usage of vehicles on caterpillar thread.
